Johnny Wu Goes Vintage: A Modern-Retro Boys’ Bath

The challenge was to transform a traditional, dark, and outdated bathroom shared by two teenage brothers into a space that felt fresh, distinctive, and enduring. The clients wanted a room that reflected their sons’ personalities—youthful yet sophisticated—so it wouldn’t feel outgrown in just a few years. At the same time, the design needed to harmonize with the home’s overall aesthetic: casual elegance with character. For this busy family, durability, ease of maintenance, and quality were essential, and because the project took place during Covid, American-made products were prioritized whenever possible. Additional storage for towels and laundry was also a key request.

The design blends playful shapes and pattern with timeless materials. Vintage-inspired, powder-coated lavatory sconces bring charm and resilience, while dramatic veining in the quartz introduces a bold, masculine strength. Classic white subway tile delivers crisp contrast and visual interest in a space without natural light, and its continued use in the water closet ensures easy maintenance. The shower niche—complete with wet-rated, dimmable LED lighting—quickly became the boys’ favorite feature, adding both function and a touch of drama.

By opening the wall near the shower, open shelving provides smart storage for towels and laundry. Leftover porcelain floor tile was custom cut into small hex mosaics for the shower floor, keeping the design playful yet refined. Glass mosaic in the niche adds depth to the sophisticated greige palette, while splashes of blue bring freshness and surprise.

Architectural elements—like the Z-frame barn door and vintage-inspired hardware—tie it all together. Black finishes ground the space, reinforcing a confident mix of modern and vintage for a bathroom that’s fun, durable, and timeless.

Designed for two teenage brothers, Johnny Wu Goes Vintage reimagines a dark, outdated bath into a durable, modern-vintage space that feels both playful and grown-up—layering classic details, bold materials, and casual elegance for a look that will stand the test of time.
